MONACO GRAND PRIX 1972

French national heroe Jean Pierre Beltoise had left his fellow countrymen of Matra at the end of 1971, where he once had started his career in single seater racing car, to join the B.R.M. to replace Jo Siffert of Switzerland, who had been killed a non-championship Formula One race. Beltoise had survived a sportscar accident at Reims, where he had gone into a deep coma for 3 days and he also sustained a lot of fractures. His left arm became had been so hurt, that Beltoise could hardly move it. So he prefered wet races, because the steering power neccessary in the rain, is much lower. Started from grid position no. 4, he immidiately took the lead of the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix. Beltoise was able to control Belgian Jacky Ickx in the Ferrari, who was considered the best wet weather driver of that epoque, from start to the finish."I am glad, it´s yours," said Prince Rainier at the victory ceremony as he does every year. For the Frenchman it was the race of his lifetime and he should never again be able to repeat this victory, before he retired from Grand Prix Racing after the 1974 season.
