The B.R.M first appeared at the 1972 Spanish Grand Prix held on the Madrid circuit of Jarama. There the car was driven by Monza 1971 winner Peter Gethin. The cars outfit was very remarkable and stood in contrast to those of the rival teams. With the nose scone being as flat as the Lotus Ford 72īs, but the bodywork looked round and flat. The water radiators were transfered into the back of the car beside the gearbox for getting more weight there, and by that better traction. The oil radiators went onto the top of the gearbox with their air-intakes on both sides of the engineīs air box. The cockpit cover also looked very unconventional with the rear view mirrors being inside for better air flow. But the concept of the car could not convince, so a revised version came to the tracks later the 1972, putting the oil radiators on both the sides of the flat and wide monocoque. Jean Pierre Beltoise could win the Worldchampionship Victory Race at Brands Hatch, a non-championship event, but otherwise the P180 never could fulfill itīs promises, so the Bourne company stopped the project at the end of the season to return to the P160 for further development.
