The story told by this movie is not the pure documentation of the greatest event in sport each year in the world, but more or less the characterization of a career being believed to be a typical American middle-class one. It is a novel, in the real sense of the meaning, and for this reason without the typical clichès to be thought of the racing drivers of the sixties. Paul Newman, actor, but also professional racing driver and team owner, in the leading role is neither a heroe nor the contrast of it. He is a true character living in the reality of the US-American motorsport business, that´s entertainment factor always has been a lot greater than that if it´s European counterpart. The movie combines excellent playing quality of Newman and his (real) wife Joan Woodward with extensive and exciting racing pictures of the sixties.

Die Geschichte, die von diesem Film erzählt wird, ist nicht die reine Dokumentation des in jedem Jahr in der Welt grössten Sportereignisses, sondern mehr oder weniger die Charakterisierung einer Karriere, von der man glaubt, dass sie typisch für die amerikanische Mittelschicht sei. Paul Newman, Schauspieler, aber auch professioneller Rennfahrer und Teambesitzer, ist in der Hauptrolle weder ein Held, noch das Gegenteil von ihm. Er ist eine wahre Persönlichkeit, die in der Realität des US-amerikanischen Motorsport-Geschäfts, das schon immer einen höheren Unterhaltungsfaktor hatte, als sein europäisches Gegenstück, lebt. Der Film kombiniert die herausragende Schauspielqualität von Newman und seiner (tatsächlichen) Ehefrau Joan Woodward mit ausgedehnten und aufregenden Rennbildern der sechziger Jahre.
