JODY SCHECKTER AT THE EUROSPEEDWAY LAUSITZ
A great honour was given to former Grand Prix world champion Jody Scheckter from South Africa. A street at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz was named after the man, who had won Ferrari`s last title before Michael Schumacher back in 1979. Scheckter had started his Formula One career in 1972 with a third McLaren Ford in the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. After some sporadic Grand Prix with McLaren he entered the Tyrrell team for his first complete season in 1974 that made him win his first ever Grand Prix at Swedish Anderstorp. After 3 successful with Tyrrell he joined the the newly founded team of Austro-Canadian oil millionaire Walter Wolf to win the team`s maiden Grand Prix at Buenos Aires 1977. From 1979 on, Scheckter drove for Ferrari and winning the title the same year. After the 1980 United States Grand Prix he retired from active competition to start a very successful business career in America. Jody Scheckter drove 112 Grand Prix and won 10 of them. Our shows him opening the Jody-Scheckter-Strasse on the 11th May 2001 together with the EuroSpeeway´s managing director Hans-Joerg Fischer.
