MARIO ANDRETTI

Mario Andretti is the second Grand Prix driver of US-American nationality winning the worldchampionship. Andretti, a native Italian, had started his Grand Prix career in a Lotus Ford 49 with a pole position at the 1968 United States Grand Prix held at Watkins Glen. The following years Andretti drove Grand Prix cars of March, Ferrari, and Parnelli, but he had been too much in US.racing to compete in all rounds regularly. That situation changed during the 1976 season, when he joined John Player Team Lotus for being their number 1 driver. A fine victory in the final round of the 1976 worldchampionship, the Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji, was the first common triumph crowned by winning the title in 1978.
