Schon im Jahr 1986 standen beide Williams Honda-Piloten Nelson Piquet und Nigel Mansell bis zum Finale in Adelaide im Kampf um die Weltmeisterschaft. Doch Mansell explodierte ein Reifen und Piquet wurde von Prost im McLaren TAG um 4 Sekunden geschlagen. Das Jahr 1987 jedoch wurde zu einem einzigartigen Duell der beiden Williams-Fahrer, das auch in der Presse mit verbalen Mitteln mit aller Härte ausgetragen wurde. Mit dem Williams Honda FW11B, dem modifizierten Vorjahresauto, gewann Piquet 3 Grand Prix, Mansell aber doppelt soviel. Dennoch wurde er nicht Weltmeister, denn im Training zum Grand Prix von Japan in Suzuka zog er sich eine schwere Rückenverletzung zu, deretwegen er die beiden letzten Läufe auslassen musste. Piquet errang die Krone kampflos.

Already in 1986 both Williams Honda drivers Nelson Piquet from Brazil and Briton Nigel Mansell were involved in the final struggle for the worldchampionship until the last round in Adelaide. But one of Mansell`s tyres exploded and Piquet was beaten by Prost in the McLaren TAG by 4 seconds. But in the year 1987 an extraordinary duel between both the Williams drivers took place, also being taken into the press by very hard verbal means. With the Williams Honda FW11B, the modified version of the year before, Piquet won 3 Grand Prix that year, but Mansell twice as much. In spite of that he was not able to become world champion, because he hurt his spine so seriously during the practise for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, that he had to leave out the last two rounds. Piquet won the title without fight.
