ALAIN PROST

1986 war Alain Prost der erste Weltmeister, der seit Sir Jack Brabham im Jahr 1960 seinen Titel verteidigen konnte. Prosts Vorfahren kommen aus Armenien, der gleichen Provinz, aus der auch die Familie des berühmten Schauspielers und Sängers Charles Aznavour entstammt. Auch Alain Prost kommt aus ganz einfachen Verhältnissen, der Vater war Tischler. Bruder Daniel starb mit nur 33 Jahren an Krebs. Eigentlich hätte Alain Fussballer werden wollen. Dann kamen die Karts, die Formel Renault, in der Formel 3 wurde er Europameister. Ken Tyrrell hat ihn entdeckt, elf und Renault, die Staatskonzerne, haben ihn gefördert. Im Debütjahr 1980 bei McLaren suchte ihn viele Materialbrüche heim, in Kyalami brach er sich deshalb den Arm. Von 1981 bis 1983 war der Druck bei Renault kaum auszuhalten. Als er 1983 die schon sicher geglaubte Weltmeisterschaft doch noch gegen Piquet verlor, wurde er gefeuert und kehrte zu McLaren zurück. Auch dort verlor den Titel 1984 gegen Niki Lauda im letzten Lauf. Doch dann gewann er mit McLaren er binnen fünf Jahren dreimal die Weltmeisterschaft. Die teaminterne Rivalität mit Senna drohte Prosts Persönlichkeit, ohnehin nicht seine Stärke, zu zerstören, er wechselte für 1990 zu Ferrari. Maranello holte er aus einer langen Talsohle, nur durch Sennas Rammstoss von Suzuka verlor er im gleichen Jahr alle Titelchancen. Nach vor Ende der Saison 1991 wurde er wieder gefeuert, es hatte erneut persönliche Differenzen gegeben. Nach einem Jahr Pause wurde er 1993 bei Williams Renault zum vierten Male Weltmeister und mit 51 Siegen hielt er viele Jahre auch den Weltrekord. Dann trat er, trotz gültigem Zweijahresvertrag bei Williams, endgültig zurück.

Zum dritten Mal bei McLaren, war er ab 1994 Berater und Testpilot. Im Winter 1996/97 erwarb er das französische Nationalteam Ligier. Ab 1998 wurden die blauen Autos vo Peugeot-Motoren angetrieben, Prost verliess die Fabrik in Magny Cours, dessen Strecke einst von Guy Ligiers Freund, dem sozialistischen Präsidenten Francois Mitterand errichtet worden war. Peugeot und die Hauptstadt Paris brachten dem Gaullisten Alain Prost kein Glück. 2000 zog sich der Autokonzern mit dem Löwen als Firmensymbol aus dem Grand Sport zurück, der Gründungssponsor Gauloises (als Gitanes seit 1976 dabei) folgte. Nach einem weiteren Jahr des Überlebenskampfes erfolgte Anfang 2002 die Insolvenz. Als Fahrer war Alain Prost ein Jackie Stewart. Als Bewerber aber ein Chris Amon.

In 1986 Alain Prost had been the first world champion to defend his title successfully since Sir Jack Brabham in 1960. Prost´s ancestors are coming from Armenia, from the same province also the family of famous actor and singer Charles Aznavour has got their roots. Alain Prost had grown up under very simple circumstances, his father had been a cabinet-maker. His brother Daniel died of cancer at the age of only 33 years. Originally he wanted to become a footballer. Then go karts had come his way followed by Formula Renault, he became European Champion in Formula 3. Ken Tyrrell had discovered him, elf and Renault, the groups owned by the state, had supported him. In his maiden year in Grand Prix Racing he suffred under a lot of material defects, for this reason he sustained a broken arm in Kyalami. From 1981 to 1983 he nearly was unable to stand the pressure at Renault. When he had lost the worldchampionship believed to be secure against Piquet in 1983, he was sacked to return to McLaren. In 1984 he lost the title again in the last round against Niki Lauda. But then he won the worldchampionship threetimes within five years at McLaren. The rivalry within the team to Senna threatened to destroy his personality, not his strong point anyway. For 1990 he switched to Ferrari. He had taken Maranello out of a long trough, the same year he lost all chances winning the title by Senna`s Suzuka ram attack. Before the end of the 1991 season he was fired again, there had been personal quarrells for another time. After a one year break he became world champion for the fourth time at Williams Renault in 1993 and for many years he was the record holder with 51 wins. Then he retired from active competition definitely despite an existing two years`contract at Williams.

Being a McLaren employèe for the third time in his career, he did the job of a test driver and also that one of an advisor from 1994 on. In winter 1996/97 he bought the French national team of Ligier. From 1998 on the blue cars were powered by Peugeot engines. Prost left the factory at Magny Cours, that`s circuit once had been built by a friend of Guy Ligier, socialist President of State Francois Mitterrand. Peugeot and the capital of Paris did not bring luck to the Gaullist Alain Prost. In 2000 the carmaker with the lion as the company`s symbol had retired from Grand Prix Racing, the foundation sponsor Gauloises (as Gitanes with the team since 1976) followed. After a further year of battle for survive the bankruptcy came at the beginning of 2002. Alain Prost was a Jackie Stewart as a driver. But a Chris Amon as an entrant.
