ZELTWEG 1970

The Grand Prix of Austria was the 9th round of the 1970 worldchampionship. Jochen Rindt, who had grown up in the city of nearby Graz, had come to his home Grand Prix with a comfortable lead in the drivers´table after having won 5 races so far, 4 of them in a row. Rindt had given his Grand Prix debut back in 1964 also at Zeltweg, on the miltary airfield in the middle of the Austrian Alps. It took some years to construct the Oesterreichring not far away from the airport. In 1970 that circuit was the most modern race track in the world. Rindt was very happy to drive his Lotus Ford 72 onto pole position, but in the race he had to retire with a blown engine. Sadly it was the last Grand Prix of Rindt, before he crashed fatally in the qualifying of Monza two weeks later. Jacky Ickx in the Ferrari won in Zeltweg 1970 ahead of his team mate Clay Regazzoni and Rolf Stommelen in a Brabham Ford.

Der Grand Prix von Österreich was der 9. Lauf der Weltmeisterschaft 1970. ochen Rindt, der im nahegelegenen Graz aufgewachsen war, war zu seinem Heim-Grand Prix mit einer kompfortablen Führung in der Fahrertabelle gekommen, nachdem er 5 Rennen, 4 davon in ununterbrochener Reihenfolge, gewonnen hatte. Rindt hatte sein Grand Prix Debüt ebenfalls in Zeltweg gegeben, und zwar in 1964 auf dem Militär-Flugplatz inmitten der österreichischen Alpen. Es brauchte einige Jahre, um den Österreichring zu bauen, der nicht weit weg vom Flugplatz lag. 1970 war diese Strecke der weltweit modernste Rennkurs. Rindt war sehr froh, seinen Lotus Ford 72 auf die Pole Position zu fahren, aber im Rennen fiel er mit Motorschaden aus. Leider war es der letzte Grand Prix für Rindt, bevor er zwei Wochen später in der Qualifikation von Monza tödlich verunglückte. Jacky Ickx im Ferrari gewann in Zeltweg 1970 vor seinem Teamkollegen Clay Regazzoni und Rolf Stommelen in einem Brabham Ford.
