OPTIMISM AGAINST THE CRISIS

If you look back, you won`t grow old, once had said famous Lotus founder Colin Chapman, who, as we all know, only had reached the age of 54 years caused by reasons not really explored until now. On the ESSEN MOTOR SHOW 2009 a special exhibition was dedicated to Lotus. Started with the early, brick-shaped Type 18 over the revolutionary 72 up to the super wing car Lotus Ford 79 making Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson win the 1978 worldchampionship in a superior manner, all important designs from Norfolk were presented. And, of course, some of Chapman`s beautiful, ultra-flat sportscars from the fifties and sixties were shown. Altogether 22 classical exhibits were shown and also Clive Chapman was there, now at the time, when the beside Ferrari most famous make returns to the Grand Prix tracks in 2010 after one and a half decade of absence.
After years of searching an orientation for it`s content the Essen Motor Show very consciously is returning to it`s roots, that it once had got in the famous Jochen Rindt Show of the sixties and seventies. And that is a very good thing. Motorsport, and deduced from it the tuning of road cars is back again in the centre, supplemented by an extensive classic sector. Concerning this point we would like to wish to return to a complete grid of current Grand Prix cars of the Formula One season just being over and a certain, periodically appearing motto like the Indianapolis 500, the Green Hell of the Nuerburgring or the World Rally Championship. For the case of the Essen Motor Show moving to the shape of th classical exhibition of documentary value, showing in original version the things, television and internet simply cannot present, then the real return would be reached. Modern live acts, the motorsport arena and the most beautiful girls of the region are an absolutely top performance.
Cars as an Experience, the motto of the 2009 Essen Motor Show never had been so real like in this year rising from the crisis. Since it`s invention the automobile is much more than a rational means of transport bringing people from point A to point B. It is also a piece of sports equipment and a work of art, also an object for the future and a historic document. So ideologists, who want to prevent mankind from destruction, have forgotten these facts meanwhile. But who is actively organizing the future, is not threatened by the fear of it. This was worth enough for a crowd of 310 000 spectators to make a trip to the Gruga despite the world economic crisis. Only optimism and, of course, the passion for the automobile helps against this crisis.
One person, who always is involved in the motor business with love and passion, is Berlin`s Heidi Hetzer, not only a professional racing and rally driver (this year she had competed in the 2000 kilometres of Germany historic rally in a giant Hispano Suiza), but also an Opel dealer, who was hit by the Ruesselsheim drama in a very special way. In the evening of the second Sunday of Advent, the last exhibition day in Essen, Mrs. Hetzer, who always is under full boost and giving her name the real meaning (hetzen stands for to hurry ) was a guest of Thomas Gottschalk`s People 2009 television show and there she did not save any critics for the new by GM installed Opel management. At the end of the show she got a bouquet of flowers like all ladies involved did, but she was only a little impressed about it: A spanner would be better.

Wenn Du zurückschaust, wirst Du nicht alt, sagte einst der berühmte Lotus-Gründer Colin Chapman, der bekanntlich, aus welchen Gründen auch immer, nur 54 Jahre alt wurde. Auf der ESSEN MOTOR SHOW 2009 war Lotus eine eigene Sonderschau gewidmet. Von frühen, ziegelsteinförmigen Typ 18 über den revolutionären 72er bis hin zum Super-Flügel-Auto Lotus Ford 79, mit dem Mario Andretti und Ronnie Peterson die Weltmeisterschaft 1978 überlegen gewonnen hatten, waren alle wichtigen Kreationen aus Norfolk zu sehen. Und natürlich wurden auch einige von Chapmans wunderschönen, ultraflachen Sportwagen aus den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren gezeigt. Insgesamt waren 22 klassische Exponate gezeigt und auch Clive Chapman war da, jetzt, da die nach Ferrari berühmteste Marke nach eineinhalb Dekaden Abwesenheit auf die Grand Pisten der Welt für 2010 zurückkehren wird.
Nach Jahren der Suche nach inhaltlicher Orientierung entwickelt sich die Essen Motor Show nun ganz bewusst zurück zu den Wurzeln, die sie in der berühmten Jochen Rindt Show der sechziger und siebziger Jahre hatte. Und das ist auch ganz gut so. Der Motorsport, und abgeleitet davon das Tuning von Serienautomobilen, steht wieder im Mittelpunkt, ergänzt durch einen umfassenden Classic-Bereich. Wünschen würden wir uns in diesem Zusammenhang noch die Rückkehr zu einem aktuellen Feld aus der gerade zu Ende gegangenen Formel 1-Saison sowie ein bestimmtes, periodisch wiederkehrendes Rahmenthema wie früher 500 Meilen von Indianapolis, Grüne Hölle Nürburgring oder Rallye-Weltmeisterschaft. Wenn die Essen Motor Show wieder etwas mehr hinginge zur klassischen Ausstellung mit dokumentarischem Wert, die im Original das zeigt, was Fernsehen und Internet einfach nicht schaffen kann, dann wäre die inhaltliche Rückbesinnung wirklich gelungen. Die modernen Live-Acts mit Boxengasse, Motorsport-Arena und den hübschesten Mädchen der Region sind ohnehin einsame Spitze.
Erlebnis Auto, das Leitmotiv der Essen Motor Show 2009 war noch nie so aktuell wie in diesem Jahr, das aus der grossen Krise kam. Das Automobil ist seit seiner Erfindung ja um so vieles mehr, als ein rationales Transportmittel, das die Bürger von A nach B bringen soll. Es ist auch Sportgerät und Kunstwerk, Zukunftsobjekt und historisches Dokument. Manche Ideologen, die die Menschheit von dem vermeintlichen Untergang retten wollen, haben das längst vergessen. Aber wer die Zukunft aktiv gestaltet, der braucht vor ihr auch keine Angst zu haben. 310 000 Zuschauer war dies heuer, trotz Weltwirtschaftskrise, ein Besuch an der Gruga wert. Gegen die Krise hilft nur Optimismus und natürlich die Leidenschaft für das Automobil.
Eine, die immer mit Leib und Seele bei der Sache ist, ist Berlins Heidi Hetzer, nicht nur Renn- und Rallyeprofi (sie nahm heuer mit einem riesigen Hispano Suiza an den 2000 km Deutschland teil), sondern auch Opel-Händlerin, die von dem Drama in Rüsselsheim ganz besonders betroffen war. Am Abend des zweiten Adventssontag, dem letzten Messetag in Essen, ist Hetzer, die immer unter vollem Ladedruck steht und ihrem Namen alle Ehre macht, Gast in Thomas Gottschalks Menschen 2009 und sparte dabei in der Show nicht mit Kritik am von GM neuinstallierten Opel-Management. Zum Schluss bekam sie wie alle Damen einen Blumenstrauß, war aber davon wenig beeindruckt: Ein Schraubenschlüssel wäre mir lieber gewesen.
