Mit 24 Jahren schon ein Teil der Geschichte zu sein, ist für ihn ganz selbstverständlich: "Ich bin ein ganz normaler Typ." Fernando Alonso Diaz, geboren am 29. Juli 1981, war immer der jüngste. Auf der Pole Position. Als Grand Prix Sieger. Und als Weltmeister. Da war er für Renault und auch für sein Heimatland Spanien der erste. König Juan Carlos, der auf den bis 1975 amtierenden, berüchtigten Diktator Franco eingeschworen war und dennoch das moderne, demokratische Spanien begründete, ist Alonsos grösster Anhänger und gratuliert per Telefon persönlich zu jedem Sieg. Als Weltmeister suchte Alonso sich umgehend eine neue Herausforderung und wechselte das Team. Denny Hulme, Niki Lauda und Michael Schumacher hatten nach dem Gewinn der Weltmeisterschaft ähnlich gehandelt.

Alonso kommt nicht, wie viele seiner Landsleute im Grand Prix Sport, aus Katalonien oder der Hauptstadt Madrid, wo die grossen internationalen Rennpisten des Landes angesiedelt sind. Seine Heimatstadt Oviedo mit seiner traditionsreichen Industrie, der angesehenen Universität und der alten Kathedrale liegt ganz im Nordwesten der Iberischen Halbinsel. Asturien war von 718 bis 910 sogar ein eigenständiges Königreich. Als aufstrebender Grand Prix Pilot bei Renault nahm Alonso seinen Wohnsitz in Oxford, da ist er ganz bodenständig. Das Renault F1 Werk in Enstone ist nicht weit entfernt und die Freunde besuchen ohnehin die Universität. Wie die Schumachers kommt auch Alonso aus eher einfachen Verhältnissen. Der Vater übte den nicht ganz ungefährlichen Beruf eines Sprengmeisters aus. Die Mutter war Angestellte in einem Kaufhaus. Fernando Alonso hat eine um fünf Jahre ältere Schwester, Lorena mit Namen. Die bekam zu ihrem achten Geburtstag ein Go Kart geschenkt, ein Ayrton Senna oder Michael Schumacher wären über ein solches Geschenk nahezu verrückt geworden. Aber die junge Dame mochte das Ding nicht leiden und der dreijährige Fernando stieg ein - und brauchte Holzklötze unter den Schuhen, um überhaupt die Pedale zu erreichen. Auch Lorena gelang der soziale Aufstieg, nach dem Abitur studierte sie Medizin, um später als Ärztin in einer Klinik zu arbeiten.

Sein Lehrjahr im Grand Prix Sport bei Minardi absolviert zu haben, gilt in der Branche fast schon als Auszeichnung. Nach 2001, wo er Rennfahrer für Minardi und Testfahrer für Benetton in Personalunion gewesen war, verbrachte Alonso das folgende Jahr ausschliesslich als Testfahrer für Renault. Nicht als Ersatzspieler, sondern als Kronprinz. Man mag über Flavio Briatore denken wie man will, aber von Menschenführung versteht er etwas. Und Fernando Alonso ist genauso intelligent wie der junge Ayrton Senna. Nur viel, viel souveräner.

Also Lorena made her way, after the college she studied medicine to become a surgeon is a hospital later.

Having done the year of apprentice in Grand Prix Racing at Minardi nearly is considered being a decoration in this business. After 2001, when he had been a racing driver for Minardi and a test driver for Benetton in personal union, Alonso spent the following year exclusively as a test driver at Renault.
