JACKY ICKX

The sun of a well-known Belgian motor journalist had started his career with motor-cycle trials. Then he had been discovered by Ken Tyrrell for Formul 3. In a Matra Ford of Team Tyrrell Ickx became the first ever European Formula 2 champion. In the Formula 2 round of the 1967 German Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring he made the decisive point in his career, when driving his Matra F2 car into the top of the Formula 1 field. Later Ickx became a great star at Ferrari driving both Formula 1 and sportscars for the Maranello team. Open confrontation broke between him and the Italians over the Ferrari 312B3 Grand Prix car of 1973, making Ickx leave Ferrari at mid-season. The good days of his Grand Prix career became rare and the Belgian concentrated himself more and more on sportscar and touring car racing.
