Since the retirement of twice world champion Walter Roehrl rallying had lost a lot of reputation in Germany in spite being very popular before. So it had been no wonder, that no worldchampionship round had taken place on German territority during the past twenty years. For 2002 Germany´s leading automobile clubs ADAC and AvD, both running their Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring and in Hockenheim, had worked together to reach the great aim of organizing the 10th of 14 rounds of the F.I.A. World Rally Championship. The three days event took place in the South West part of Germany with start and finish in the historical city of Trier lying very close to the frontier of Luxembourg on 23rd th 25th August, 2002. The first leg went through the vineyards of the famous river Mosel, while spectacular motorsport could be seen on the Baumholder army training ground at leg 2. The third and final leg went through the Saar Territory. The ADAC Rallye Deutschland was defined as an asphalt event taking part under partly wet conditions and consisted of 22 special stages.
