THE YEAR OF THE CHAMPIONS
Sebastian Vettel`s successful defending of his title against four other aces
Sometimes the visible simularity between both the characters can cause really fear. If you put the photos of Jochen Rindt and Sebastian Vettel side by side, that ones of the first ever and the current German language speaking world champion, you could think both were brothers. Rindt and Vettel, born in Mainz and Heppenheim pretty near to the front door of Hockenheim or the Nuerburgring, are separated by four decades, absolute contrary forms of socialisation and also by the language they share: Rindt speaks in the dialect of the town growing up, Austrian Graz, and Vettel in that one of the German Federal country of Hesse. But Sebastian Vettel, who is very interested in the analysis and the history of his sport in contrast to Michael Schumacher, would have the wish of Rindt being his team mate for the case of this imaginary trip through the last century would become reality - it would be the ultimate challenge in history. Today Rindt`s youth friend Dr Helmut Marko is Vettel`s both charming and really tough boss at Red Bull, who already had deversified from a soft drink producing company to an important and successful sport, technology and media group . Despite the very demanding world wide media business Vettel always remains friendly and behaves in a modest way. Like Rindt in the old days Vettel has got extraordinary intellectual abilities available combined with a unique driving skill and a diamond like toughness both against the rivals and, above all, against himself. Only seven world champions in history, Ascari, Fangio, Brabham, Prost, Senna and Schumacher, were able to defend their title successfully the following year: In this unique group of racing automobilists now Sebastian Vettel is the eighth personality and really the youngest one. For the first time he appeared with his girl-friend Hanna being together with for years at the great F.I.A. Gala in Dehli , but in contrast to Bette Hill, Helen Stewart or Rosanne Mansell the current first lady of Grand Prix Racing lives nearly without the general public, obviously with intent. In the 2011 season five world champions were competing with Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel for the first time in the history of the worldchampionship (since 1950). And also Iceman Kimi Raikkonen will return in 2012; the Finn had become neither familiar nor happy in the forests of the World Rally Championship for the last wo years.
In 2011 Adrian Newey`s both brilliant and pretty ugly Red Bull Renault RB7 was the Racing Automobile of the Year to win 12 Grandes Prix overall. McLaren`s beautiful looking MP4/26 conquered six wins because being developed in the fastest way and that is no reason for Woking to be frustrated about. In contrast to that the disappointment in Maranello was giant. The only once winning F150° Italia did not give any glory to it`s home country as well as the meanwhile retired prime minister Berlusconi. A few days before Christmas 2011 Fernando Alonso played Father Christmas at a Santander event in Madrid together with his fellow countrymen Pedro de la Rosa and Marc Gene; shortly after that he announced his separation from his wife Raquel. De la Rosa will drive for the Spanish national team HRT their factory moving from German Greding near Munich to Valencia; former Minardi driver replaces Dr Colin Kolles in the position of the team principal. While the small Hispania team is not a member of the FOTA for a while, also Red Bull, Ferrari and Sauber left this organisation shortly before Christmas, but these teams will obey the Ressources Restriction Agreement, a juridically binding contract also in the years to come. The political quarrel of 2011 concerning the by exhaust fumes driven diffusor will not exist any longer, because the regulations are clarified now. The F.I.A. World Council also decided at the beginning of December: The maximum duration of a Grand Prix will be four hours despite possible longer interruptions, the re-lapping of backmarkers behind the safety car will be allowed again. At the end of 2011 the safety discussion in the whole motorsport is going on intensively; the fatal crashes of Dan Wheldon at the IndyCars and Marco Simoncelli during a MotoGP event should prevent the drivers from irresponsible overtaking manoevres (Vettel in the Curva Grande in Monza, Webber in the Eau Rouge of Spa) in the future. Professor Sid Watkins, the pioneer of medical supply in motorsport was honoured for his life work by the F.I.A before handing over the directorate of the world motor federation`s medical institute to Gerard Saillant. Robert Kubica, very seriously hurt in a rally accident at the beginning of the year celebrated his 27th birthday at the beginning of December, but he will not be able to compete in 2012. Kubica separated from his personal doctor Riccardo Cecarelli because of different opinions on the Pole`s recovery programme. In Paris Bercy Phillipe Streiff, who is paralyzed since a testing accident at Jacarepagua back in 1989, has revived his famous karting event; meanwhile a lot of current and former Grand Prix aces competed in Felipe Massa`s kart race at Brazilian Florianapolis or at the Race of Champions at German Duesseldorf (where Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher won the Nations Cup for Team Germany for the fifth time in a row). In these days German tabloit newspaper BILD Zeitung has got the headline: Bernie Ecclestone - My daughters waste my money. That happened in a time, when Bernie himself had to be a witness in the Gribkovski trial at Munich to be possibly followed by investigations in the U.K. Nearly perfect: The near future return of the French Grand Prix at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet alternating with Belgian Spa Francorchamps. The Scuderia Toro Rosso sacked both their drivers, Sebastian Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari will be replaced by Daniel Ricciardo and Jean Eric Vergne at Faenza in 2012: Red Bull`s cadre of talents is giant. Force India will be competing with Nico Huelkenberg and Paul di Resta in 2012, the former DTM Champion from Scotland was the Rookie of the Year in 2011. The 2012 team of Mercedes-Benz and their Arabian investors aabar is re-named into Mercedes AMG, the sporting division of Daimler AG, that has been founded by two former engineers of the Stuttgart based car maker as an independent engine shop during the sixties. AMG stands for the founders Aufrecht, Melcher and the small village of Grossaspach in the Southern Part of Germany. Who often critizes the Mercedes team in 2010 and 2011, forgets: Red Bull did take five years to make a winning team out of former Jaguar Racing, too. But on the cars from Milton Keynes there is the softdrink logo, but on those ones of Brackley the star is shining. Economy, no real expert will deny, has got a lot to do with psychology and not only with real facts. And winning the worldchampionship with Brawn GP in the interim year of 2009 was one of the very rare lucky cases in history generally finding it`s basis in a unique idea: The car with the so-called double diffusor the rival teams were not able to develop fast enough at that time. KERS, the adjustable rear wing DRS and the flexible strategies permitting Pirelli tyres created a lot of exciting races with the greatest possible number of overtaking manoevres in 2011 despite Vettel und Red Bull dominating the scene, a fact, that is essential for the general public crowds both on the grandstands and even more important ahead of the television screens. Who wants to see exciting races, needs different cars in different situations, not mashines made equal by the regulations. Shortly before Christmas Emerson Fittipaldi celebrated his 65th birthday, but the man with the most exciting victory in history, at Monza in 1971, has gone forever: Peter Gethin.
Grand Prix ambassador number one, double world champion Sebastian Vettel had to do a public marathon programme before starting his Christmas holidays and he did it so relaxed as we all know. His physiotherapist Tommi Parmakosky will not be with him any longer in 2012, the Finn will re-join ice hockey. From the end of January the Villa Trips Exhibition will find a new home in the famous Prototyp Museum in the Shanghai Avenue of Hamburg. Now Vettel has finished the work both Graf Berghe von Trips and Jochen Rindt once had begun, but that work was interrupted by fate. And Vettel did it in an individual but very similar way. The circuit is closed. Something new is beginning.

Sebastian Vettels erfolgreiche Titelverteidigung gegen vier weitere Asse
Manchmal macht die optische Ähnlichkeit ja wirklich Angst. Hält man ihre Fotos nebeneinander, dann könnten Jochen Rindt und Sebastian Vettel , der allererste und der aktuelle deutschsprachige Weltmeister, rein vom Aussehen her für Brüder gehalten werden. Rindt und Vettel, der eine in Mainz, der andere in Heppenheim ziemlich direkt vor der Haustür von Hockenheim und Nürburgring zur Welt gekommen, trennen vier Jahrzehnte, zeitbedingt völlig konträre Sozialisationen und auch die gemeinsame Sprache: Rindt spricht mit Grazer, Vettel mit hessischen Dialekt. Aber Sebastian Vettel, der im Gegensatz zu Michael Schumacher, bestens mit Geschichte und Analyse seines Sports vertraut ist, würde sich Jochen Rindt, könnte diese imaginäre Zeitreise in der Tat Wirklichkeit werden, als Teamkollegen wünschen - es wäre die ultimative Herausforderung der Geschichte. Heute ist Rindts Jugendfreund Dr Helmut Marko Vettels ebenso charmanter wie knallharter Boss bei Red Bull, die sich vom alleinigen Getränkehersteller längst zum gut aufgestellten Sport-, Technologie-, und Medienkonzern diversifiziert hat. Der bei allem weltweiten Medienrummel stets freundlich und bescheiden auftretende Vettel verfügt wie seinerzeit Rindt über messerscharfen Intellekt kombiniert mit gottbegnadetem fahrerischen Umsetzungsvermögen und einer diamantenen Härte sowohl gegen seine Gegner als vorallem gegen sich selbst. Bislang konnten in der Geschichte nur sieben Weltmeister, Ascari, Fangio, Brabham, Prost, Senna und Schumacher ihren Titel im folgenden Jahr erfolgreich verteidigen: Jetzt ist Sebastian Vettel in dieser einmaligen Gruppe von Automobilrennfahrern die achte Persönlichkeit und bei weitem die jüngste. Bei der grossen F.I.A.-Gala in Dehli erschien er mit seiner langjährigen Freundin Hanna, aber anders als Bette Hill, Helen Stewart oder Rosanne Mansell lebt die aktuelle First Lady des Grand Prix Sports bislang offenbar ganz bewusst unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit. Erstmals in der Geschichte der Weltmeisterschaft (seit 1950) waren 2011 mit Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button und Sebastian Vettel fünf Weltmeister am Start. Für 2012 kommt auch Iceman Kimi Räikkönen zurück, der in den Wäldern der Rallye-Weltmeisterschaft zwei Jahre weder heimisch noch glücklich wurde.

Die Frustration in Maranello dagegen war riesig; der F150° Italia machte mit nur einem Erfolg seinem Heimatland im zum 150. Jahrestag der Staatsgründung genauso wenig Ehre wie der inzwischen zurückgetretene Premierminister Berlusconi. Einige Tage vor Weihnachten 2011 spielte Fernando Alonso, zusammen mit Pedro de la Rosa und Marc Gene, bei einer Veranstaltung von Santander in Madrid den Weihnachtsmann; danach machte er die Scheidung von Gattin Raquel publik. De la Rosa fährt 2012 im spanischen National-Team von HRT, das seine Fabrik vom deutschen Greding bei München nach Valencia verlegt, der frühere Minardi-Pilot Luis Perez-Sala löst Dr Colin Kolles als Teamchef ab. Während das kleine Hispania-Team schon lange nicht mehr Mitglied der FOTA ist, verliessen vor Weihnachten auch Red Bull, Ferrari und Sauber diese Organisation, halten sich aber weiterhin an das für fünf Jahre rechtswirksam bindende Abkommen über die Ressourcen-Beschränkung. Der politische Streitpunkt 2011 bezüglich des durch Auspuffgase angeblasenen Diffusors fällt in der Zukunft weg, denn die Regeln wurden in klarer Form neu gefasst. Ebenfalls neu durch den F.I.A-Weltrat Anfang Dezember beschlossen: Die Maximallänge eines Grand Prix beträgt auch bei längeren Unterbrechungen nunmehr vier Stunden, das Zurückrunden hinter dem Safety Car ist wieder erlaubt. Die Sicherheitsdiskussion im gesamten Motorsport ist Ende 2011 voll im Gange, die Todesstürze von Dan Wheldon bei den Indy Cars und Marco Simoncelli in der MotoGP sollten von verantwortungslosen Überholmanövern (Vettel in der Curva Grande von Monza, Webber in der Eau Rouge von Spa) in Zukunft abschrecken. In Paris-Bercy hat der seit einem Testunfall 1989 querschnittsgelähmte Phillipe Streiff sein einstmals so berühmtes Kart-Rennen wiederbelebt, viele aktuelle oder ehemaliges Grand Prix Asse fuhren derweil bei Felipe Massas Kart-Rennen im brasilianischen Florianapolis oder beim Race of Champions in Düsseldorf (wo Sebastian Vettel und Michael Schumacher zum fünften Mal hintereinander die Nationenwertung für Deutschland gewannen). Die BILD-Zeitung meldete: Bernie Ecclestone - Meine Töchter verprassen mein Geld. Und dies zu einer Zeit, wo Bernie himself im Gribkowski-Prozess in München als Zeuge aussagen musste und möglicherweise auch im Vereinigten Königreich Ermittlungen eingeleitet werden könnten. Nahezu perfekt: Die Rückkehr des Grand Prix von Frankreich auf dem Circuit Paul Ricard abwechselnd mit dem belgischen Spa-Francorchamps. Dann feuerte die Scuderia Toro Rosso gleich beide Piloten, Sebastian Buemi und Jaime Alguersuari werden 2012 in Faenza durch Daniel Ricciardo und Jean-Eric Vergne ersetzt: Der Red Bull-Nachwuchskader ist riesengross. Force India fährt 2012 mit Nico Hülkenberg und Paul di Resta; der ehemalige schottische DTM-Meister war 2011 der Rookie des Jahres. Am meisten überholt hat in diesem Jahr Michael Schumacher, ganze 115 Mal. Das Team von Mercedes-Benz und ihrem arabischen Investor aabar heisst 2012 Mercedes AMG, der Sporting -Division der Daimler AG, die in den sechziger Jahren von zwei ehemaligen Ingenieuren des Stuttgarter Hauses als unabhängige Motorenbau-Firma gegründet worden war. AMG steht für Aufrecht, Melcher und den kleinen Ort Grossaspach in Süddeutschland. Wer das Mercedes-Team 2010 und 2011 ständig kritisiert, vergisst: Auch Red Bull brauchte fünf Jahre, um aus Jaguar ein Sieger-Team zu formen. Auf den Autos aus Milton Keynes allerdings klebte nur das Brause-Logo, auf jenen aus Brackley allerdings der Stern. Wirtschaft, das wird kein ernstzunehmender Experte bestreiten, hat neben harten Fakten auch viel mit Psychologie zu tun und der Gewinn der Weltmeisterschaft mit Brawn GP im Übergangsjahr 2009 ist eine der seltenen Glücksfälle der Geschichte gewesen und basierte im Wesentlichen auf einer überragenden Idee: Das Auto mit dem doppelten Diffusor, das die Rivalen in dieser Form zu jener Zeit noch nicht weit genug entwickelt zur Verfügung hatten. KERS, der verstellbare Heckflügel DRS und die eine flexible Rennstrategie erlaubenden Pirelli-Reifen sorgten 2011 trotz der Dominanz von Vettel und Red Bull für spannende Rennen mit einer Rekordzahl von Überholmanövern, was für das unverzichtbare Massenpublikum dieses Sports auf den Tribünen und vorallem vor den Fernsehschirmen von extremer Wichtigkeit ist. Wer attraktive Rennen sehen will, braucht unterschiedliche Autos in verschiedenen Situationen, nicht juristisch gleichgeschaltete. Kurz vor Weihnachten feierte Emerson Fittipaldi seinen 65. Geburtstag, aber der Mann mit dem aufregendsten Grand Prix-Sieg der Geschichte, in Monza 1971, ist für immer von uns gegangen: Peter Gethin.
Grand Prix-Botschafter Nummer 1, Doppel-Weltmeister Sebastian Vettel, hatte vor seinen Weihnachtsferien ein Marathon-Programm in der Öffentlichkeit zu absolvieren und tat dies mit der gewohnten Gelassenheit. Sein Physiotherapeut Tommi Pärmakoski ist 2012 nicht mehr dabei, der Finne geht zurück zum Eishockey. Die Ausstellung aus der Villa Trips findet ab Ende Januar eine neue Heimat im berühmten Prototyp Museum in der Hamburger Shanghai Allee. Vettel hat das Werk sowohl des Grafen Berghe von Trips als auch Jochen Rindts, von tragischen Schicksal unterbrochen, auf ganz individuelle und dennoch sehr ähnliche Weise vollendet. Der Kreis hat sich geschlossen. Etwas neues beginnt.
