NELSON PIQUET

Sein Vater, Arzt, Kongressabgeordneter, später sogar Brasiliens Gesundheitsminister, hiess mit Nachnamen Soutomaior; die Mutter, deren Vorfahren aus der Schweiz gekommen waren, Kröger-Piquet. Nelson hat überdies deutsche, französische und indianische Wurzeln. Die Eltern hatten ihn nach San Francisco zum Studium der Volkswirtschaft geschickt, auch zum Tennisspielen und um all die anderen Dinge zu erlernen, die für eine bürgerliche Karriere eben so gebraucht werden. Der Sohn indessen interessierte sich an der Universität viel mehr für die Technik. Und seit sich Anfang der siebziger Jahre Emerson Fittipaldi mit dem berühmten Pelé verbündet hatte, war Brasilien nicht nur ein Fussball- sondern auch ein Motorsportland. Um die Interessen des Vaters in der Öffentlichkeit zu wahren, nahm Nelson am Beginn seiner Laufbahn den Namen seiner Mutter an.

Go Kart, dominierende Figur in der Britischen Formel 3, schon Mitte 1978 in Hockenheim das Debüt im Grand Prix Sport in einem Ensign Ford an der Seite von Rübezahl Harald Ertl: Nelson Piquet hatte anfangs nicht die Kondition, eine komplette Renndistanz durchzustehen und war deshalb froh, wenn er mit technischem Defekt ausfiel. Nach drei weiteren Rennen im privaten McLaren Ford M23 von BS Fabrications wurde er Werksfahrer bei Brabham. Von Niki Lauda hat er dort viel lernen können und schon 1980 kämpfte er mit Alan Jones bis kurz vor Saisonende um den Weltmeistetitel, um diesen erstmals im folgenden Jahr zu gewinnen. Nelson Piquet war zusammen mit Dieter Stappert und Ing. Paul Rosche die treibende Kraft hinter den Erfolgen von BMW in der Turbo Ära. In München geniesst er deshalb bis in die Gegenwart höchstes Ansehen, nicht nur deshab, weil er 1983 der erste Turbo-Weltmeister der Geschichte wurde, sondern weil er vorallem in den anfänglichen Krisenzeiten ausserordentliches Engagement bewiesen hatte. Der Wechsel zu Williams, Mitte 1985 besiegelt, brachte 1987 die dritte Weltmeisterschaft ein, aber der vielen teaminternen Duelle mit Nigel Mansell müde, fuhr Piquet 1988 und 1989 für Lotus. Es waren zwei verlorene Jahre. Bei Benetton blühte er nochmals auf, bis Ende 1991 Michael Schumacher über Nacht ins Team kam und Piquet in Enstone besonders bei Tom Walkinshaw in Ungnade fiel. Für 1992 wagte der Mann mit den vielen Visionen den Schritt zu den 500 Meilen von Indianapolis, zog sich aber im Training Trümmerfrakturen in beiden Beinen zu. Aber ein Jahr später war er wieder zurück, fiel im Rennen aber aus. Danach fuhr er nur noch gelegentlich Langstreckenrennen, er kam nach Spa und auch nach Le Mans.

Nelson Piquet hat aus seinen verschiedenen Beziehungen insgesamt sieben Kinder, sechs Söhne und eine Tochter namens Julia. Einer der Jungen ragt besonders heraus: Es ist Nelson Angelo, geboren in Deutschland während Piquets grosser Zeit mit BMW. Seine Mutter ist die Holländerin Sylvia , zuvor mit dem italienischen Industriellen Graf Agusta (Motorräder, Hubschrauber) verheiratet, ehe sie Nelson Piquets Freundin wurde. Nelson A. Piquet jr sieht aus wie der junge Nelsinho, als er nach Europa kam und fährt Formel 3. Nico Rosberg, Matthias Lauda, jetzt der junge Piquet: Die nächste Generation grosser Namen ist doch längst da.

His father, surgeon, member of parliament, later also Brazil´s health secretary, had been called Soutomaior by his surname; his mother, whose ancestors had come from Switzerland, had been named Kroeger-Piquet. Nelson also has got German, French and Indian roots. His parents had sent him to San Francisco to study economics, also for playing tennis and to learn all the things being neccessary for a bourgeoise career. But their son had got more interested in technology instead of that at the university. And since Emerson Fittipaldi had allied with famous Péle, Brazil was not only a football, but also a motorsport country. To care for the interests of his father in the public, Nelson had adopted his mother´s family name as his own one.

Go karts, dominating figure of the British Formula 3, already in the middle of 1978 in Hockenheim the debut in Grand Prix Racing in an Ensign Ford at the side of Ruebezahl Harald Ertl: At the beginning of his Grand Prix career Nelson Piquet had not been in the physical condition to stand a whole race distance, and for this reason he had been happy to retire early caused by a technical failure. After three further races in the private McLaren Ford M23 of BS Fabrications he became a works driver at Brabham. He had been able to learn a lot from Niki Lauda and already in 1980 he could fight for the worldchampionship with Alan Jones shortly till the end of the season to win the title the following year for the first time. Together with Dieter Stappert and engineer Paul Rosche Nelson Piquet had been the driving force behind the successes of BMW in the turbo era. For this reason he has got highest reputation in Munich not only for being the first ever turbo world champion in history, but above all, because he had shown extraordinary efforts after times of crisis in the very beginning. The switch to Williams, fixed in the middle of 1985, brought him the third title in 1987, but tired of the many team internal duels with Nigel Mansell, Piquet drove for Lotus in 1988 and 1989. It were two years lost. At Benetton he had blossomed out another time, until in 1991 Michael Schumacher entered the team over night to make Piquet fall out of favour with Tom Walkinshaw at Enstone. For 1992 the man with the many visions had dared the step to the Indianapolis 500, but he sustained rubble fractures of both his legs during practice. But one year later he was back in the brickyard, but he retired in the race. After that he was driving endurance races from time to time, he came to Spa and also to Le Mans.

Nelson Piquet has got seven children overall out his different relationships, six sons and a daughter called Julia. One of his sons is of extraordinary quality: Nelson Angelo, born in Germany during Piquet´s great time with BMW. His mother is Dutch Sylvia, before married to Italian industry magnate Count Agusta (motorcycles, helicopters), then becoming Nelson Piquet´s girl-friend. Nelson A. Piquet looks like the young Nelsinho, when he once had come to Europe, and he is also competing in Formula 3. Nico Rosberg, Matthias Lauda, now the young Piquet: The next generation of great names is already there.
