RUBENS BARRICHELLO: THE BURDEN OF A DECADE

National pride and patriotism, thousands of years old values, are represented especially in many countries of the so-called Third World. The dedication to the natio (in Latin: the tribe) also is something absolutely natural. That has something to do with the own identity, with culture and also with reason. Natio and ratio do not contradict each other, they complement each other. Who considers the nation as one big family, will feel enormous support and security in the times of globalization meaning rapid social change. On the other hand someone, who is negating the nation as an institution, has got great deficits. In the 21st century Brazil is no developing country anymore. It is a state commonly is called a Newly Industrializing Country. The fifth biggest country on earth consists of enormous contrasts, geographically, historicly and economically. At the national flag the terms ORDEM E PROGRESSO are standing - order and progress. Brazil had been monarchy and military dictatorship, only since 1985 the country is a democraticly organized federal state with a freely elected civil president. Once the Portuguese had taken five million slaves from Africa to the sugar-cane plantations, the language of the former colonial power also belongs to the Brazilian culture like the over 180 Indian dialects. Brazil´s heros of sport have got very different roots. Pele, the most famous footballer in the world is an Afro-Brazilian. Emerson Fittipaldi, the first automobile world champion, is of Spanish and Polish origin. Nelson Piquet, the Winnetou of Grand Prix Racing, is a multi-cultural personality, whose traces are not only going back to the Indians but also to Switzerland. The greatest of all, Ayrton Senna, had got Spanish and Italian ancestors. When he had to leave earth forever on 1st May 1994, much too early, of course, the nation fell into deep depression. The belief in God was comforting, giving hope and finally a perspective. In Brazil the religion is not so much perverted by the secularization as in many countries of the old Europe.

Who is born in Interlagos basically has got no other chance than to become a racing automobilist. Rubens Barrichello - his ancestors had partly come from Italy - is born in 1972. At that time Emerson Fittipaldi won his first worldchampionship in the famous JPS Lotus Ford 72. Little Rubinho was seeing the at that time eight kilometres long Grand Prix circuit, but also the kart track there, from the kitchen window of his parents´house. Interlagos means in English: Between the lakes. Already at the age of 21 Rubins Barrichello was able to establish himself in Grand Prix Racing. Of course, he had been driving karts in Brazil, he had been competing in the British Formula 3 championship and he also had been successful in Formula 3000. At the side of his idol Senna he wanted to learn how to become not only a successful Grand Prix driver but also to be a good ambassador of his home country. But history had not given him enough time to do so. Two days before Senna´s death he himself had nearly lost his life at Imola, when crashing into a steel made post of the Variante Bassa flying deeply. Since 1st May 1994 in the Tamburello, also on a steel post, the following inscription is standing: ADDIO CAMPIONE. From that time on Barrichello had to carry the complete burden of a rising nation being robbed of their symbol from one second to another. Barrichello was carrying this burden with extraordinary courage and great dignity. A whole decade long. He also is a man of great loyalty. Four years he was driving for Jordan, three for Stewart, since 2000 he is staying at Ferrari. And he is still living, meanwhile with his wife Silvana and his son Eduardo, in Sao Paulo. God, the home and the family: The roots of a man. Family is the smallest unit nation is consisting of. And God has given man religious laws to make him obey them, not to kick them off. Rubens Barrichello is the only driver not to collapse at the side of Michael Schumacher, also Catholic and also family man without scandals. Barrichello is partner, not adjutant. Some guys coming from Brazil after Senna had passed away, were vasalls like Diniz or Rosset or Bernoldi. Others remained without any personal image like Burti, da Matta, Zonta or Massa. Rubens Barrichello is a modest star. But exactly this makes him an idol not only in Brazil. The half of the 172 million Brazilians are younger than 25 years of age. Nation and religion are also helping man to go beyond limits. Of course, Barrichello never was able to fill the gap left by Senna. Senna was Brazil and Senna was motorsport. But Senna was not God, of course. To claim that would be presumtuous. But it is true, what German news magazine DER SPIEGEL once had expressed about Niki Lauda: Not God, but similar to God. In fact Senna was the Imperator. Winning he had considered his God given right. Faith and the laws of nature are absolutely no contradictions, the are presupposing each other. And Formula One also is not the same as Grand Prix Racing (going back until 1906), but also a part of it, in spite we have to conceed a very important one. We have to learn again to think in historic dimensions.
Barrichello had lead the great sporting nation Brazil in an examplary manner out of the crisis. Exactly when the national soccer team had lost the world cup against France in 1998. At Hockenheim in the middle of 2000 he had won his first Grand Prix under dramatic circumstances. From grid position 18 and in the 123th attempt. Such a long time no other Grand Prix driver had ever taken. There had been a madman on the track, three safety car periods and a lot of rain at the end of the race. Barrichello stayed on dry weather tyres and won. For the first time since Adelaide 1993 the Brazilian national anthem was played on the podium. "God had helped me winning and I am dedicating my victory to Ayrton Senna," were his words. Repect is also a value many people have forgotten, when thy are adoring the graven image of money. In fact the first victory is always the most difficult one, the next ones really are coming more easily. Rubens Barrichello had make that experience the same, but really the tough way. Of course, he still wants to become world champion. Faith really can move mountains, especially for Rubens Barrichello. And Senna is still with us, that is said not only by Niki Lauda or Domingos Piedade. Who is negating the own nation has got a deficit character. Also who is denying the existance of God, admits, that God really is there, says Michael Degen, actor and author of great reputation, who had survived the Holocaust as a German Jew only very closely during his childhood. On the memorial website of Roland Ratzenberger two sentences of Konfuzius (551 - 449 BC) are standing: All mundane things are a dream in spring. Consider death as homecoming.

RUBENS BARRICHELLO: DIE BÜRDE EINER DEKADE

Nationalstolz und Vaterlandsliebe, Jahrtausende alte Werte, sind in vielen Ländern der sogenannten Dritten Welt besonders ausgeprägt. Die Hingabe an die natio, (Lateinisch: Der Volksstamm) ist auch etwas völlig Natürliches. Das hat etwas mit der eigenen Identität zu tun, mit Kultur und auch mit Vernunft. Natio und ratio widersprechen sich nicht, sie ergänzen einander. Wer die Nation als grosse Familie begreift, der wird dort in Zeiten der Globalisierung, also des schnellen sozialen Wandels, enormen Halt und Sicherheit verspüren. Umgekehrt hat derjenige, der die Nation als Institution negiert, grosse Defizite. Brasilien ist im 21. Jahrhundert längst kein Entwicklungsland mehr. Sondern das, was man gemeinhin als Schwellenland bezeichnet. Das fünftgrösste Land der Erde besteht aus enormen Gegensätzen, geographisch, historisch und ökonomisch. In seiner Nationalflagge finden sich die Begriffe ORDEM E PROGRESSO - Ordnung und Fortschritt. Brasilien war Monarchie und Militärdiktatur, erst seit 1985 ist das Land ein demokratisch organisierter Bundesstaat mit einem frei gewählten, zivilen Präsidenten. Die Portugiesen hatten einst fünf Millionen Sklaven aus Afrika auf die Zuckerrohrplantagen geholt, die Sprache der einstigen Kolonialherren gehört ebenso zur brasilianischen Kultur wie die über 180 indianischen Dialekte. Brasiliens Helden im Sport haben ganz unterschiedliche Wurzeln. Pele, der berühmteste Fussballer der Welt, ist Afro-Brasilianer. Emerson Fittipaldi, der erste Automobilweltmeister, ist spanischer und polnischer Abstammung. Nelson Piquet, der Winnetou des Grand Prix Sports, ist eine multikulturelle Persönlichkeit, dessen Spuren nicht nur zu den Indianern, sondern auch in die Schweiz zurückreichen. Der Grösste von allen, Ayrton Senna, war spanischer und italienischer Herkunft. Als er am 1. Mai 1994 die diesseitige Welt verlassen musste, viel zu früh gewiss, fiel die Nation in tiefste Depression. Der Glaube spendete Trost, gab Hoffnung und im Ergebnis eine Perspektive. In Brasilien ist die Religion noch nicht so sehr von der Sekularisierung pervertiert worden wie in vielen Ländern des alten Europa.

Wer in Interlagos geboren wurde, hat im Grunde ja keine andere Wahl, als Automobilrennfahrer zu werden. Rubens Barrichello - seine Vorfahren stammten teilweise aus Italien - ist Jahrgang 1972. Emerson Fittipaldi gewann da im berühmten JPS Lotus Ford 72 seine erste Weltmeisterschaft und Interlagos erlebte seinen ersten Grand Prix von Brasilien, im ersten Jahr noch ohne den Status eines Weltmeisterschaftslaufs. Der kleine Runbinho sah den damals acht Kilometer langen Grand Prix Kurs, aber auch die dortige Kart-Piste, aus dem Küchenfenster seines Elternhauses. Interlagos heisst auf Deutsch: Zwischen den Seen. Im Alter von 21 Jahren hatte sich Rubens Barrichello bereits im Grand Prix Sport etabliert. Natürlich war er in Brasilien Kart gefahren, hatte die Britische Formel 3 absolviert und war auch in der Formel 3000 erfolgreich. An der Seite seines Idols Senna wollte Barrichello lernen, ein ebenso erfolgreicher Grand Prix Pilot wie Botschafter seines Heimatlandes zu werden. Die Geschichte hat ihm dazu keine Zeit gegeben. Zwei Tage vor Sennas Tod hätte er in Imola beinahe selbst sein Leben verloren, als er im Tiefflug gegen den Stahlpfosten in der Variante Bassa geprallt war. In der Tamburello steht seit dem 1 Mai 1994, gleichfalls an einem Stahlpfosten, die Aufschrift: ADDIO CAMPIONE. Von jetzt an trug Barrichello die ganze Bürde einer aufstrebenden Nation, die von einer auf die anderen Sekunde ihres Symbols beraubt war. Barrichello trug diese Bürde mit ausserordentlicher Tapferkeit und grosser Würde. Eine ganze Dekade lang. Er ist zudem ein Mann von grosser Loyalität. Vier Jahre fuhr er für Jordan, drei für Stewart, seit 2000 ist er bei Ferrari. Und er lebt, inzwischen mit Gattin Silvana und Sohn Eduardo, noch immer in Sao Paulo. Gott, die Heimat und die Familie: Die Wurzeln eines Menschen. Die Familie ist die kleinste Einheit, aus der die Nation besteht. Und Gott hat dem Menschen religöse Gesetze gegeben, damit er sie befolgt, nicht damit er sie mit Füssen tritt. Rubens Barrichello ist der einzige Pilot, der an der Seite Michael Schumachers, auch er Katholik, auch er ein Familienmensch ohne Skandale, nicht zerbrochen ist. Barrichello ist Partner, nicht Adjutant. Manche, die nach Senna aus Brasilien kamen, waren Vasallen wie Diniz oder Rosset oder Bernoldi. Andere blieben ohne persönliches Profil wie Burti, da Matta, Zonta oder Massa. Rubens Barrichello ist ein bescheidener Star. Aber auch das macht ihn zum Leitbild nicht nur in Braslien. Die Hälfte der 172 Millionen Brasilianer ist jünger als 25 Jahre. Die Nation und die Religion helfen dem Menschen auch, Grenzen zu überschreiten. Natürlich konnte Barrichello die Lücke, die Senna hinterlassen hatte, niemals ausfüllen. Senna war Brasilien und Senna war Motorsport. Natürlich war Senna nicht Gott. So etwas zu behaupten, wäre vermessen. Aber es gilt, was das deutsche Nachrichtenmagazin DER SPIEGEL einst über Niki Lauda geschrieben hatte: Nicht Gott, aber gottähnlich. Senna war vielmehr der Imperator. Zu Siegen betrachtete er als sein gottgegebenes Recht. Glaube und Naturgesetze sind absolut keine Widersprüche, sondern bedingen einander. Und die Formel 1 ist auch nicht der Grand Prix Sport (der bis ins Jahr 1906 zurückgeht), sondern nur ein Teil davon, wenngleich ein sehr wichtiger. Wir müssen wieder lernen, in historischen Dimensionen zu denken.
Barrichello hat die grosse Sport-Nation Brasilien in vorbildhafter Weise aus der Krise geführt. Gerade als die Fussball-Nationalmannschaft 1998 die Weltmeisterschaft gegen Frankreich verloren hatte. Mitte 2000 hat er in Hockenheim unter dramatischen Umständen seinen ersten Grand Prix gewonnen. Vom 18. Startplatz und im 123. Versuch. Solange hatte vor ihm noch kein Grand Prix Pilot gebraucht. Da war ein Verückter auf der Piste, drei Safety Car Phasen und zum Schluss auch sehr viel Regen. Barrichello blieb auf Trockenreifen und siegte. Erstmals seit Adelaide 1993 erklang auf dem Podium die brasilianische Nationalhymne. "Gott hat mir geholfen zu siegen und meinen Sieg widme ich Ayrton Senna," waren seine Worte. Respekt ist auch ein Wert, den viele schon vergessen haben, wenn sie stattdessen den Götzen Geld anbeten. Der erste Sieg ist in der Tat immer der schwerste, die folgenden kommen dann wirklich leichter. Rubens Barrichello hat diese Erfahrung ebenfalls gemacht, allerdings auf wirklich extreme Weise. Natürlich will er immer noch Weltmeister werden. Der Glaube kann in der Tat Berge versetzen, für Rubens Barrichello ganz besonders. Und Senna ist noch immer bei uns, das sagen nicht nur Niki Lauda und Domingos Piedade. Wer die eigene Nation negiert, ist eine defizitäre Persönlichkeit. Auch wer die Existenz Gottes leugnet, gibt zu, dass es ihn gibt, sagt Michael Degen, Schauspieler und Autor von grosser Reputation, der als deutscher Jude den Holocaust in seiner Kindheit nur mit Mühe überlebt hatte.
